Window of Illusion BBS now has a dial up line for those of you in the chicago area (or else where) that do not have internet access. Although I guess if you don't have internet access you can't read this story. So those of you that know other dial up BBSes need to spread the word. Also you should all thank Darkling for donating the phone line that does not get used for anything except DSL.

Now, I can hear the questions all ready. "I thought Window of Illusion BBS was located in Elmhurst Illinois. Isn't that a 630 area code like the old BBS number?" The answer is YES, the BBS is in Elmhurst Illinois and not Chicago. "Then how come the new dial up number is in the 312 area code?" That is where the line is located, remember it's a donated line people. "Ok, then how does a dial up connection make it from Chicago to Elmhurst, a 30 mile modem cable?" Oh come on people we live in the 21 century here, 30 mile modem cables have been around for years!
Actually the simple answer to all the questions is to explain how the system works. When you dial up the number and connect to the modem you are connecting 30 miles away from the BBS. Once connected a small bit of text pops up on the screen, give or take some modem connection reports that are shown on some terminals. You should see this...
FIRST
For right now what you need to do at this prompt is just type "bbs" in lower case with no quotes. In the future it will be a menu option. Perhaps something like (1) For Window of Illusion (2) For PC Game Server since once the connection is made I can connect ya to just about anything.
So you type "bbs" and press enter/return (whatever your keyboard calls it) and you should see this...
SECOND
It will take little time for it to print on your terminal. At this point a telnet connection is made from the dial up location over the internet to node 10 on Window of Illusion BBS. After this it's business as usual and you just login as new or with your user name.
THIRD
I did not use Windows running Argus to pick up the phone as a front door and then drop into Dailup-To-Telnet by R & M Software, makers of Game Server. I had planned to use it for a few weeks just to get the dial up working. Since FreeBSD was going to be installed on the machine picking up the call. I needed to find a good solution to doing it in FreeBSD. mgetty+sendfax found here was used to pick up the phone and hand off the connection to the FreeBSD telnet program. It might sound insecure, but there is no way that I know of to keep the login from doing what it's supposed to. Infact, you can't even login to the FreeBSD side from the dial up as any system user.
The reason Argus didn't work was due to the EMSI handshake data that is sent\requested at connection time by Argus. That info is used on a system running a front door program to start data downloads and start up auto logins. This system was made to work on PC BBS, and only would cause the Amiga CNet telnetd to dump the connection. There was no option (as there should be) to turn off EMSI. FreeBSD devil, is there anything you can't do?
