Grapevine Gone?

News I went to Grapevine Magazine’s web site last week to find a message posted saying, “there will be no more Grapevine Magazine.” I haven’t heard anything from DazzaBoy so I didn’t know what the hell the problem was till last night when I found a submission to this site from some guy named Pazza. So, I have a clue what the problem is now.

The submission sent last night at around 10:00pm CST, came a little after I sent an email to DazzaBoy at Grapevine magazine (which later bounced back to me) to determine what the problems were over there. At face value this submission seemed to be an explanation as to what transpired over at Grapevine to make them want to shutdown. As it turns out it was from a guy named “Pazza” who claims to be the original editor of the original Grapevine magazine.

He claims that the current incarnation of Grapevine was created with no support of the original team members of Grapevine Magazine. That it used the Grapevine name, the LSD name, and parodies of the original editors names to try and gain the popularity of the once legendary Grapevine Magazine in the UK Scene.

He had my attention right up until the point of saying, “The original Grapevine died because the world had changed, the Internet had become the WWW and disk magazines had became totally pointless, newsgroup access is available to all that want it, any clown can surf to a WWW page. So there was no longer a need for a diskmag from the days 2400 modems where still expensive, and 14400 modem users were still elite.”

I am so sick and tired of hearing this line of reasoning from people that use the Internet to blame the Internet for the collapse of a software company, BBS, or magazine group. Why is it always the buyers, users, or readers that give up on your product? Could it be possibly, you gave up on them? Perhaps it is not the world that changed, but your group of people who failed to find a way to exploit this change. Why should another group of people be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail for wanting to pick up a legacy where it left off with new technology. Ya know I submitted stories that are offline and gone now. What about my body of work, why is it all about you guys and your “Legendary status in Amiga UK.” Oh captain my captain… This old status of yours means nothing to me, but then again I don’t live in the UK. All I know is the work that was put into this Grapevine now. I liked it; my BBS users and web site readers enjoyed it.

Anyhow, to finish off my point here I would like to say that you “old skoolers” gave it up and you quit. The memory of your greatness seems to lie only with in your own ranks. So I fail to see how anyone is “taking you down with them.”

On that note, since I can’t get a hold of DazzaBoy. Since I am sure this “elite group of old skoolers” have shamed him into committing suicide over your attacks, if they are anything like what you sent to this site. I hope that he would consider an offer to restart an old magazine of mine. Maybe even a new project with a new name and mission statement. I didn’t want to remove any Grapevine content from this site, but I had to since all the links were broken. Hope to hear from you DazzaBoy.

    (Apologies for the Anon log in but I can't remember my password!) Hi Drew/WOIBBS users. I'd just like to clear a few things up behind the cease in production of Grapevine magazine and the demise of the Ellesdee site. Basically, we've recieved very little article input for issue#4 and our group ESD have become less willing to contribute what little free time we have into a project which has very little rewards. This all sounds a little harsh but it's something that's been going on for a while and it's been me that's held everyone together through the rough times. The other major problems were regarding our use of the name Grapevine and use of the Ellesdee name. We arugued this point time and time again and made references in the mag to it many times, yet the 'old skool' stubborn ass UK and European demosceners just couldn't get their heads around why we were doing it? We had the backing from the few original LSD members that were available when we started production and we actually owned the Ellesdee domain name at the time. Yet people still regarded us as name theives and it was a mockery of the Grapevine memory. Bullshit! We asked other ex-LSD members if they minded us carrying on with GV and they were either contactable or weren't bothered either way. The other thing that went aganist us was our 'middle ground' stance on the demoscene content and variety computer content. Hardcore demosceners didn't like our variety articles and old GV fans and regular users had no interest in mainstream demoscene stuff. You would think that with us doing this, we are keeping everyone happy. Right? Wrong! We tried to get involoved with the UK Demoscene, but these days, it is a very different scene attitude to the old Amiga scene which we were all originally part of. Although, we bent over backwards for these guys, we recieved NO article input or backing from them and all we ever did was argue over stupid scene values. We've decided to pull the plug on Grapevine but we are working on another project and we were in the process of restructuring our message forum, but Zildjian (admin of the Ellesdee website) hasn't been contactable for months and has completely shut down the ESD site without any warning? Suddenly Pazza has come back onto the scene with the same inflated ego that he's always had and he has the balls to tell us that we should grow up and move on, yet his forum moan was the same pile of horseshit that he used on a previous GV revival attempt. This is a guy who is cutting and pasting stuff from over 5 years ago? I know exactly who the real person is here that needs to move on. He became a nobody once he quit the editing role of the original Amiga version of Grapevine (by LSD) yet he still thinks he has some sort of ownership over the name? Anyway, I've wasted enough text on this loser already. The future.... The main guys behind ESD are intent on creating a new site which will properly outline our interests of the Old Skool scene and we are currently working on a new style forum which offers a LOT more areas and threads than our previous forum. We will also be creating threads in support of the Telnet BBS scene. We'd link to thank Drew and the readers of WOI for their readership and I hope to be giving you all some more good news very soon.       Well, I see the screw jobs that are half a world away from me are finding the stuff on this site about Grapevine. I said what I needed to say about it in my news post. I don't really care what a bunch of old crabby Amiga people think about the current Grapevine. I liked it, my users liked it, and whatever project you guys come up with I will do anything I can to help you promote it.

    It's no suprise that some Old Skoolerz have this idea that now that the old days are gone, they are also dead. HELLS NO! They're only dead if we say they are. By running BBSes and e-zines like Grapevine, it keeps the spirit that energuzed and inspired us to create and go forward. Let the damn nay sayers go off to some colony, be fruitfull and multiply. They they can all stand around being pessimistic and getting nothing done.
